The Power of Arts Integration
Tamara Mills began her career with a BA in Art Education from Salisbury University, as a Visual Arts Teacher at Pocomoke Middle School. She loved teaching middle-school aged children, however, after 9 years realized that she also enjoyed mentoring her peers and teaching adults. She returned to SU to earn her Masters in Post-secondary Ed., and Educational Leadership, with an Admin certification in 2007. Tamara served 2 years as Assistant Principal/Extended School Administrator at Berlin Intermediate, and Arts Immersion School. She was offered the position of WCPS Coordinator/Supervisor of Instruction in 2011, for multiple content areas, the largest being Fine & Performing Arts. This would allow her to lead and positively effect more teachers and the future of fine arts for children in Worcester County! During her time at the District Office, Tamara has been coordinating curriculum and supervising/observing educators, and providing professional learning in the following content areas: Fine Arts, PE, Health & Wellness, Integrated Health Literacy, Family & Consumer Science, Gifted and talented (Prek-4), and Afterschool/Summer Programs. She has helped secure technology for the arts, art kits for students at home during covid-19, was a part of the MSDE's Fine Arts workgroups for 'Social-emotional Learning', and 'Safe Return to School', and helps raise the level of value for the arts in her community. She partners with arts agencies such as Art League of Ocean City, Worcester County Arts Council, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Symphony 21, and MAEA. She has helped facilitate several MAEA events on the Eastern Shore of MD for art teachers.
Mrs. Mills was recognized as Worcester County Teacher of the Year (2007), a MD Teacher of Promise Mentor for future art teachers, has led WCPS's Health & Wellness program since 2013, and received the Worcester County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Council's Prevention Award in 2015. She recently became an Apple Certified Teacher in May 2020. She was recognized by the National Art Education Association, as their Eastern Region Supervision and Administration Art Educator of the Year in 2020.
